B2B marketing through YouTube?

You know we have been doing social media for sometime now for our own company and also for a few of our clients. One area we have not discussed to much is YouTube. Because of our typical responses from businesses in the past when we bring up social media we are sure you are thinking B2B Marketing on YouTube, are you crazy? Isn’t this stuff for kids? Isn’t this just a fad for people singing songs and doing weird dances?

Well I am here to tell you that although the answer to some of these questions might be true, there are also some other facts you might like to know about before you totally write-off YouTube. 

Check out some of these YouTube Statistics:

YouTube users Age:

  • 18% of YouTube users are under the age of 18
  • 20% are 18-34 years old
  • 19% are 35-44 years old
  • 23% are 45-54 years old
  • 20% are over the age of 55

I bet you are now thinking boy who would have thought. It’s not just for teens anymore. So if your B2B target buyer is between 35-55, there is a good chance you will find more of them on YouTube than you may have first thought. Would you have guessed 42%?

Ok, so you may be still asking yourself so how do I know if they are my demographic? Age is one thing, but what else do we know about these people?

What is the typical income level of the people on YouTube?

  • 6% make less than $25,000
  • 20% make $25,000-$49,000 
  • 25% make $50,000-$74,999
  • 19% make $75,000-$99,999
  • 18% make $100,000-$149,999
  • 10%make $150,000 or more

So if your typical target market has an annual income of $75K or greater, you have 47% of YouTube users that are meeting your needs.

Videos watched on their first month on YouTube:

  • 70% get at least 20 views
  • 50% get at least 100 views
  • >20% get more than 500 views

  • 3% get more than 25,000 views
  • 1% get more than 500,000 views

In order to make YouTube effective, you may have to do several videos. The key to any marketing effort on the social media is being very active. So if these numbers are looking good to you as a B2B marketer, know that you will need to build a strategy to attack this medium. Keep in mind YouTube is just a tool and you certainly have to develop a plan of attack and keep after it all the while measuring and tracking the results of your campaign.

  1. Wonderful research on this little used marketing tool! B2B marketing is challenging and knowing what tools are out there that will bring you to your audience is more critical than ever. YouTube does have a cache as a youth oriented market but the numbers cited in this article bring the medium into a different and more beneficial focus, especially for B2B. 
     
    I think the question that remains is, what YouTube stats are there that might show business vs. consumer profiles? Is there any way to extrapolate, of the Internet users who watched nearly 31 billion online videos, how many are business oriented as opposed to consumers? If this kind of demo were available, it would be invaluable to B2B marketers.

    B2B marketing through youtube can be very useful. We have done just a little and honestly not devoted the real time needed to make it successful. I can tell you though that if we committed to producing videos the way we produce articles on our blog we would see amazing results. The tough part is finding the resources to do everything if you are a small business. 
     
    I do not have the data you request on the number of businesses watching the online videos. I will tell you though that as broadband expands and video equipment and software become cheaper and cheaper everyday, this is going to become more and more popular. That being said, the companies that are out there doing it now are going to be innovators and light years a head of the pack of mainstream users. That is why getting this up and running now is extremely important now. I hope this helped and want to thank you for you comment.

  5. Very good article and stats on Youtube for B2B. I needed something to prove worth of online video. Curious of how many people actually clickthrough from Youtube to a website or Call a Phone# At the end of the video though.

    Great thoughts.Those are great things to measure. If I find some more stats on this sort of thing I will certainly share them either here or in another blog article. We have just done some minor YouTube stuff and started to see some results. The problem is we dropped the ball and stopped doing things.
