What is "RSS"? Why do I care? How do I use it?

Posted by Dale Berkebile on Fri, Oct 28, 2011

If you are tech savvy you have been using RSS for ages, it's been around for years. If you are a little less tech savvy you might want to look into it for two reasons:

  1. It will allow you to broadcast your message out to people and allow them to subscribe to your regular blog posts. This is very powerful to build your reach.
  2. You may want to subscribe to other people's blogs. This allows you to stay on top of your favorite content in a quick easy manner.

Imagine you like getting the newspaper but you really only read the sports section and the local events section. All the other sections get thrown away and they are unread right? Well, this is where RSS come in. In the digital world you can just subscribe to the content you want. So maybe you like sports, but really only want to read about football and really do not care about volleyball, basketball or golf. You can subscribe to only the topics you like as long as the sites offer this level of segmentation. Then if you want only art related events you only subscribe to this segment. See how easy life could be if you only subscribed to the things most relevant in your life?

Beyond this, how valuable would it be if you had the ability for prospects to subscribe to your marketing message? Chances are these people are pretty good prospects. As long as you keep publishing valuable or remarkable content these people will follow and read your messages. If you had 500 people that subscribed to your blog via RSS, how many do you think would share your content with their friends or better yet, become clients after you built trust with them. Talk about staying top of mind, this is a great tool for broadcasting your content (keep in mind publishing content is the key here, your dead in the water if you do not publish regularly).
