Over the years we must have built hundreds or thousands of web sites for people/companies. Most of the time these companies want a site built with under 20 pages, typically more like 5 to 8 pages. Although this is a great foundation it is no longer valid to have an 8 page static web site.
Today search engines are ranking sites based upon their:
We hear a lot of people throw around the terms SEO, Optimized for Search and Search Engine Optimization. This is great that companies are starting to understand they need this sort of thing, but it seems there is still quite a learning curve to overcome in order to understand how to buy these services or what they are buying or need to be buying.
Before I get off track, I want to bring it back to page count. Sites with a high quantity of pages rank better than a site with fewer pages. Keep in mind however that the pages need to be quality and useful pages. So, do not go out and start slapping pages up on your host account hoping to beat the search engine ranking. The goal is to consistently be adding pages of quality.
Google sees value in regular posting and updates of pages. The best way to do this is to build your site on a "Content Management System". A Content Management System (CMS) is basically a web site builder for the non technical. CMS's make it easy for anyone to add or edit pages to their web site. Once the branded template is designed for your web site it is then built into your CMS software. The next step is writing a lot of content and adding more pages.
Here is an example of what a CMS can do for you. Six months ago we were building our own web site via the standard design and programming (HTML, XHTML, CSS etc.). Our last site had roughly 11 pages and hasn't been edited for about a year. We wanted to add pages, but found it hard to make time between client projects and also take the time to design and code each new page we wanted to add. After setting up the CMS on the Brandwise site, in 4 months we have gone from 11 pages to roughly between 200 and 240 pages.
This system is so easy it is no longer work to add pages. I'm sure a lot of you are saying why would we want a site that has 200+ pages? Well the short answer is that you want to get your site found and the best way to get found is put quality content on your site. The key is each page is also specific to these prospects needs because every page is tied to a keyword or key phrase that someone will do a search on. The more pages you have that are built around keywords, the better chance you are going to hit the topic your prospects are searching for.
Search engines also like people linking to your site. The better the quality of your web site content, the more valuable it is to prospects. People will link to this type of information from their own site. The other thing having new quality content will do, is it will bring people back to your site. The true goal of a web site is not for one time visitors, but to start building a relationship with your visitors to establish trust and start the conversion process (turning a visitor into a client).
So what is more important quality web pages or quantity of web pages? Well the answer is both are very important. To have a successful website you have to focus on building content and regularly building more pages. This is the quantity part. At the same time however you truly need to add value in oder to not only get visitors, but also to keep them coming back to your site.
