Branding - The Power & Danger of (political) Iconography.

Posted by Dale Berkebile on Tue, Sep 22, 2009

This is an interesting video that is talking about the presidential logo, and past and present president logos and how they are used. Although there are a few things I do not agree with this speaker, he does bring up some really great points.

The Obama campaign has truly tapped in to the powers of building a brand. This is the first time, I have seen a president or any political campaign that I have been impressed with and also a little sad I was not a part of helping to develop. Now, political marketing is done all the time, but no one has ever done it to such a professional level as the Obama people. They not only created a strong logo, they built an integrated marketing program including all the typical political marketing items:

  • posters
  • direct mail
  • commercials
  • Face-to-face presentations
  • etc, etc

But then from out of no where the Obama team start using Social Media like crazy. Wow, reaching out to the youth on their turf, boy that's refreshing. Hmmm, maybe this guy not only speaks about change, but also is willing to make changes. Sadly, very few Americans like change and will protest to try and bring things to an end. The crazy thing though is that this campaign is never ending. Not only did Obama win, but the campaign is still going on. Do to the 24/7 access to the self published media the Obama brand and team are on all the time.

It will be interesting to see how much stays the same now that anyone can publish and article now and start a meet-up group in order to protest and air our thoughts.

The next presidential candidate had better be brand wise or they will not be able to over come the strongly branded Obama machine.
